The Brief History of the Kawai Piano Factory
The Beginnings – Koichi Kawai’s Legacy
The history of Kawai is closely linked to Koichi Kawai, who was born in Japan in 1886. From a young age, he was fascinated by mechanical structures and musical instruments. He began his career at Nippon Gakki, the predecessor of Yamaha, where he soon became one of the leading experts in piano mechanics.
Koichi Kawai’s engineering precision and innovative mindset, however, increasingly drew him toward his own vision. As a result, in 1927, he founded the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory, which later became Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co. This year is generally regarded as the official founding of the Kawai piano company.
The First Kawai Pianos and the Development of Japan’s Musical Instrument Industry
The first Kawai-branded pianos were launched in the early 1930s. Even at that time, these instruments stood out for their reliability and precise craftsmanship, which was remarkable in an era when Japan’s musical instrument industry was still largely in a learning phase compared to European manufacturers.
From the very beginning, Kawai’s goal was not to copy Western piano-making traditions, but to develop and improve them. Koichi Kawai placed great emphasis on research and development, as well as the creation of proprietary manufacturing technologies.
Post-War Reconstruction and Generational Change
World War II had a significant impact on Japan and on the Kawai factory. After Koichi Kawai’s death in 1955, leadership of the company passed to his son, Shigeru Kawai. This generational transition played a key role in the brand’s later international success.
Shigeru Kawai was not only a businessman but also an engineer and innovator. Under his leadership, the company underwent major modernization and began its international expansion. By the 1960s and 1970s, Kawai pianos were becoming increasingly recognized in Europe and North America.
ABS Action and Technological Breakthroughs
One of the most important milestones in Kawai’s history was the introduction of the ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) piano action in the 1970s.
While many traditional manufacturers hesitated to adopt modern materials, Kawai boldly embraced industrial technology, while preserving the acoustic character of the instruments. This forward-thinking approach helped make Kawai one of the most innovative piano manufacturers in the world.
The Birth of the Shigeru Kawai Brand
In the early 2000s, Kawai introduced the Shigeru Kawai premium piano series, designed specifically for concert halls and professional musicians. These instruments are made in small batches from carefully selected materials, with each piano tuned and regulated by master technicians.
Today, Shigeru Kawai pianos can be found in prestigious concert halls and music academies around the world, and they serve as the official instruments in several international piano competitions.
Digital Pianos
Kawai has made its mark not only in acoustic pianos but also in digital pianos and digital uprights since the 1980s. Their goal has been to replicate the touch and feel of acoustic instruments as accurately as possible, offering pianists a natural playing experience even in a digital format.

Today, Kawai Musical Instruments is a global company with manufacturing facilities in Japan, Indonesia, and other countries. Its headquarters remain in Japan, continuing to uphold the company’s legacy of quality, innovation, and dedication to musicians.
